Former FIFA Official Drops Bombshell on Rangers’ Falkirk Win — ‘Clearly Wrong’ Moment Has Fans Talking
Rangers secured a 2-1 win against Falkirk in a game that was marred by controversial decisions by the referee Steven McLean.
While no penalties were given, both sides had valid arguments for spot kicks being awarded to their side.
At the end, Derek McInnes will be content that his side picked up the three points, courtesy of a brace by Lawrence Shankland.
Mark Clattenburg admits Steven McLean was spot on for not giving Rangers a penalty
Former FIFA official Mark Clattenburg spoke exclusively to Rangers News following the game on Wednesday night.
In the first half, Djeidi Gassama found himself inside the penalty area and made contact with Falkirk defender Ryan Strain.
There were half-hearted appeals by the Gers for a penalty, but they were waved off by McLean, and the visitors also did not protest much as the ball was still in play and there was a goal-scoring opportunity.
Clattenburg claims that, had a penalty been given, it would have been the wrong decision.
The on-field referee would have been told by VAR that he had made a mistake and he would have then been sent to the monitor, where he would overturn his decision.
The former Premier League referee said: “There is a half-hearted appeal for a Rangers penalty when Ryan Strain of Falkirk challenged Djeidi Gassama of Rangers inside the penalty area.
“The referee was correct to play on and the replays supported the call.
“The camera behind the goal shows a natural coming together of both players, with neither player making an appeal for a foul.
“If the referee did award a penalty, then I would expect the VAR to change the decision as it would have been clearly wrong.”
