Danny Murphy Sends Coventry City a Powerful Message After Man City Defeat: “The Negativity Has Been Inflated”
Coventry City may have suffered another defeat, but former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy believes there is no reason for Sky Blues supporters to panic.
Coventry’s difficult start to life in the Premier League continued on Saturday as they were beaten 1–0 by Manchester City. It was another disappointing result for a side that arrived in the top flight as runaway Championship winners, but the performance itself was a completely different story.
After losing their opening match against Arsenal, Coventry were expected to face another extremely difficult afternoon against one of Europe’s strongest teams.
Instead, they gave Manchester City a real test.
The Sky Blues created several good opportunities, competed for long periods and showed much more confidence than they had during their opening-day defeat. Although they ultimately left the Etihad Stadium without a point, there were plenty of encouraging signs for manager and supporters alike.
Murphy was one of those impressed by what he saw.
Speaking on Match of the Day, the former England international argued that the criticism surrounding Coventry’s start to the campaign has been exaggerated.
For Murphy, the result should not be viewed in isolation. The performance against City showed that Coventry are capable of competing at this level, even when facing some of the biggest clubs in European football.
The Sky Blues have now lost their opening two games without scoring, which naturally has created concern among supporters.
However, Murphy believes the bigger picture is far more positive.
He pointed out that newly promoted sides often struggle when they visit Manchester City. Many teams arrive with a defensive approach, spend most of the match under pressure and eventually suffer a heavy defeat.
Coventry did not follow that pattern.
They were brave enough to attack, created opportunities and made City work for the victory.
That is why Murphy believes the performance could become an important moment for the Sky Blues.
“They had some huge chances and I think it’s arguably their best performance so far because they are up against one of the best teams in Europe,” Murphy said.
There were two particularly important chances that Coventry will look back on with regret.
The first fell to Taiwo Awoniyi.
The forward found himself with an opportunity to test Manchester City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, but his finish failed to trouble the goalkeeper.
Murphy felt that Awoniyi needed to do much better with the chance.
“He’s got to score really, at least hit the target, make the keeper make a save. It’s a poor finish. That changes the dynamic of the game.”
It was a crucial moment because Coventry were still very much in the contest.
Had they taken the opportunity, the entire match could have developed differently.
Manchester City would have had to respond to falling behind, while Coventry would have had something to defend and a huge boost in confidence.
Instead, the chance went begging.
Even more frustrating for Coventry was another opportunity that arrived shortly before City eventually found the winning goal.
Jack Rudoni was presented with a chance at the back post following a set-piece situation and a long throw.
Murphy believes Rudoni should have directed his header towards the far post.
The opportunity was not an easy one, particularly with Donnarumma charging out of his goal.
The Italian goalkeeper is an imposing figure, and facing him in a one-on-one situation can be extremely difficult.
Nevertheless, Murphy felt Coventry had been presented with another massive opportunity to change the outcome.
“Then this chance, 90 seconds before City score, Rudoni at the back post, set play, long throw, I think he’s got to head that towards the far post.”
The timing of the chance made it even more painful.
Coventry were only moments away from potentially leaving Manchester with a valuable point when City eventually broke the deadlock.
That is football, and it is often decided by small moments.
For Coventry, the important thing is not to allow those missed chances to overshadow the bigger picture.
They went to Manchester City, created opportunities and stayed in the game for a long period.
That alone should give the players confidence.
Murphy made this point when comparing Coventry’s performance with what usually happens when newly promoted teams visit the Etihad.
“Very rarely do you see teams who’ve just come up from the Championship go to City and create that many chances and give them a game, they just get rolled over.”

“There’s a lot of games coming up for Coventry where they won’t have to deal with what they’ve dealt with today,” Murphy explained.
That is perhaps the biggest reason why supporters should remain patient.
The Premier League season is not decided after two matches.
There are still many fixtures ahead, and Coventry will have opportunities to build momentum, gain confidence and establish themselves in the division.
The key will be learning from these early experiences.
The defeat against Manchester City showed that Coventry need to become more clinical.
Creating chances is encouraging, but those opportunities must eventually be converted.

“This negativity, after losing the first two, I think that’s been inflated. I don’t think they should be worried about that.”

Fans naturally want to see their team pick up points immediately after promotion.
But the circumstances matter.
Coventry are adapting to a completely different level of football. New players are being introduced, the manager is trying to establish his ideas and the squad is still learning how to operate against Premier League opposition.
Those things take time.
Murphy also highlighted the fact that Coventry are still developing as a team.
“They’re getting new ideas with new players together,” he said, pointing towards the changes taking place within the squad.
That could be one of the biggest reasons why supporters should avoid judging the team too quickly.
A newly promoted club needs time to settle.
Players need to understand each other’s movement, the new signings need to adapt to their teammates and the manager needs to find the right balance.
Coventry will have plenty of opportunities to do that.
The defeat at Manchester City may hurt, especially because the Sky Blues created chances that could have produced a completely different result.
But there is a huge difference between being beaten heavily without offering a threat and losing narrowly after creating genuine opportunities against one of Europe’s best teams.
Coventry experienced the latter.
That should give them something to build on.
The challenge now is turning positive performances into positive results.
The Sky Blues cannot afford to become obsessed with the league table this early in the campaign. Instead, they need to focus on improving every week, becoming more clinical in front of goal and maintaining the confidence they showed against Manchester City.
If they can do that, the points will eventually follow.
For Murphy, the message is clear.
Coventry City should not allow two early defeats to define their Premier League campaign.
There are plenty of matches still to come, and the Sky Blues will soon face opponents against whom they will have a much greater chance of collecting points.
The performance at Manchester City has already shown that Coventry are capable of competing.
Now they must turn that belief into results.
For a team that dominated the Championship last season, the Premier League was always going to bring a completely different challenge.
The first two matches have been difficult, but they have also provided valuable lessons.
And if Coventry can learn quickly, improve their finishing and maintain the courage they showed at the Etihad, there is every reason for supporters to remain optimistic.
