‘I Won’t Lie’ – Former Coventry City Star Jamie Allen Goes Viral for Take on Frank Lampard’s Managerial Role

Jamie Allen has never been one for empty words. The former Coventry City midfielder, who gave seven years and more than 200 appearances to the Sky Blues, has delivered a heartfelt and extensive assessment of Frank Lampard’s work that has quickly resonated with supporters. Speaking with the honesty of a player who lived the journey from League One to the Premier League, Allen made clear where his loyalties still lie and why he believes the current manager is the right man to keep Coventry City in the top flight.
“I won’t lie,” Allen began. “When Frank came in, there were questions. That’s normal. New manager, big reputation, and a club that had already been through so much. But what he has done since then has been proper. He took a group that knew how to compete in the Championship and turned them into champions. That doesn’t happen by accident.”
Allen’s own story at Coventry is woven through the club’s modern revival. He arrived from Burton Albion in 2019 when the Sky Blues were still fighting their way out of League One. He stayed through the promotion, the difficult early Championship years, the play-off campaigns, the FA Cup runs, and finally the title-winning season that brought Premier League football back to the CBS Arena after a 25-year absence.
“Seven years is a long time at one club these days,” he said. “I didn’t expect it when I signed. You never do. But the place gets into you. The supporters, the staff, the feeling around the training ground when things are going well. I made friends for life there. Some of the lads I came through with are still involved. That bond doesn’t just disappear because your contract ends.”
He spoke with clear affection about the transformation he witnessed.
“When I first joined, we were a League One side with ambition. By the time I left, we were Premier League champions of the Championship. That journey doesn’t happen without the right people driving it. Mark Robins played a huge part in the earlier years, no question. But Frank came in and added another level. The standards went up. The detail went up. The belief went up.”
Allen was particularly strong when discussing the recent changes at the club and the way Lampard has handled the step up.
“People outside don’t always see the work that goes on behind the scenes. The recruitment has been smart. The permanent deal for Frank Onyeka was a big statement. Keeping the core of the side that won promotion was crucial. Adding quality without losing the identity of the team is hard, and Frank has managed that. The lads still run for each other. They still fight for each other. That hasn’t changed just because the league has.”
On Lampard’s ability to succeed in the Premier League, Allen was emphatic.
“I think he will do really well. I really do. He’s got the experience of managing at the highest level already. He knows what the Premier League demands. But more than that, he knows this group. He knows which players can handle the step up and which areas still need strengthening. The win at Nottingham Forest was massive — not just for the three points, but for the belief it gives everyone. Newly promoted sides need results like that early to settle the nerves.”
Allen refused to accept the idea that Coventry are simply making up the numbers.
“I’ve seen the way they set up. Organised, hard to break down, dangerous on the counter, and capable of controlling games when they get the chance. That’s a Premier League team. It won’t be easy every week — no one said it would be — but with Frank in charge I believe they can stay up comfortably and maybe even surprise a few people. The supporters deserve that. After everything the club has been through, they deserve to watch their team compete with their heads held high.”
He also addressed the emotional side of watching from the outside.
“It’s strange not being in the dressing room anymore. You miss the banter, the daily routine, the feeling of walking out at the CBS with the crowd behind you. But I’m proud of what we achieved together. Two promotions, a league title, memories that will last forever. And I’m proud to see the club still moving forward under Frank. He has the lads’ respect. That much is obvious.”
Allen’s words have been widely shared among the Coventry support precisely because they come from someone who lived the climb. There is no agenda, no attempt to position himself for a return, just a genuine belief in the project and the man leading it.
“Frank gets the club,” he concluded. “He understands what it means to the city and the fans. As long as that connection stays strong, and as long as the players keep giving everything, I think Coventry City will be just fine this season. More than fine. I think they can thrive.”
For a fanbase that has waited a generation to see their team back among the elite, hearing one of their own speak with such conviction has struck a powerful chord. Jamie Allen may no longer wear the shirt, but his heart clearly remains sky blue — and his faith in Frank Lampard is absolute.
