Emmanuel Fernandez has been called out for what he did in Rangers’ 1-0 win over St Mirren at Ibrox on Wednesday night.
The Nigeria international played the full 90 minutes alongside Olwethu Makhanya and even kept a clean sheet for the hosts as Bojan Miovski scored the winner.
Fernandez won the ball near the halfway line and played a fancy pass to Sterling.
However, the ball fell to Agrafiotis, which led to St Mirren hitting the Gers on the counter-attack.
Sterling had the presence of mind to foul him, but by doing so he ended up getting booked.
This did not sit well with Cammy Bell on co-commentary on Rangers TV during the game.
He stated that the Nigeria international needs to be making better decisions, being the senior centre-back in the side
Had Sterling not made the intervention, Agrafiotis would have been clean through on goal.
While the right-back picked up a booking for his foul, it was entirely Fernandez’s fault for letting it get to that situation.
Bell said: “When you’re a centre-half, you need to make better decisions.
“These are bad decisions.
“That flick there. Can’t be doing that.
“He’s an excellent player, but you just cannot do that.”
Should Fernandez be dropped from the Rangers XI vs Celtic?
Fernandez played the full 90 minutes while Ben Godfrey was an unused substitute against St Mirren.
While the Gers did not pay the price for the defender’s error on Wednesday, Celtic are not expected to be as forgiving.
McInnes, while not in immediate sack danger, is yet to fully win over the fanbase, and beating their arch rivals on Sunday would definitely do the trick.
Given Fernandez’s shaky performances, it does make sense to drop him for at least the first Old Firm derby and see how
Godfrey has fully recovered from his injury and is at full fitness, so he should be given the nod to play next to Makhanya.
It remains to be seen if McInnes can make this bold call after four straight wins.
