Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis sacks his 25TH manager in 16 years just seven games into club’s season

The Nottingham Forest owner is also the boss of Greek giants Olympiacos and Portuguese side Rio Ave.

The club have announced that manager Jose Luis Mendilibar has left his role in the dugout.

Mendilibar, 65, had led the club to a Conference League triumph in 2024 before winning a domestic treble the following season.

But after failing to qualify for the Champions League this season a change in manager has been made.

Olympiacos confirmed the decision with a statement which honoured his achievements.

It then went on to state that his time at the club was over.

A segment said: “But in football, as in life, there are cycles that eventually close. But what resonates in eternity is what you have achieved.

“The appreciation, respect and love of the OLYMPIC family will accompany you forever, General, along with the strong emotions that united us and are eternal.

“Thank you for everything.”

The Spanish manager becomes the 25TH manager to be axed by Marinakis in the last 16 years.

Last season, the Greek businessman went through four managers at Nottingham Forest.

Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked early in the season before his replacement Ange Postecoglou was axed after just eight winless games.

Former Burnley and Everton boss Sean Dyche was then hired before getting in the firing line after 25 games.

The East Midlands side survived relegation with Vítor Pereira in charge but the club parted with him after the season ended.

Oliver Glasner has since taken charge at the City Ground following his exit from Crystal Palace.

Olympiacos have dropped into the Europa League and will start their campaign against Polish side Jagiellonia Białystok.

The club is currently third in the Greek Super League after three games in which they have won two and drawn one.

The news of Mendilibar’s departure just a day after Marinakis was in Greece to visit injury-stricken star Ayoub El Kaabi.

The Moroccan striker broke his leg during Olympiacos’ Greek Super League clash with Volos on Saturday.
