Frank Lampard’s Response to Sky Sports Pundits ‘Goes Viral After Claim’ Amid Coventry City Victory Over Nottingham Forest

Coventry City finally have their first Premier League win in 25 years. Jay Dasilva’s second-half strike secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest, ending a run of four straight defeats without a goal and lifting a huge weight off the shoulders of Frank Lampard and his players.

The result itself was dramatic enough. Dasilva finished calmly after latching onto a long ball from goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, and Coventry then survived a late scare when Igor Jesus thought he had equalised, only for VAR to rule the goal out for a foul on Caleb Yirenkyi. But it was what happened after the final whistle that truly captured attention.

In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, Lampard delivered a refreshingly honest and insightful assessment of his side’s journey so far. His words, particularly one striking comparison, quickly began circulating widely among supporters and neutral observers alike.

“We’re a team with a lot of players who have come in and are playing their first stint of Premier League football,” Lampard said. “And I think it’s human nature. You can’t expect them to come in… not everyone’s a Wayne Rooney, or these superstars, who just own it.”

That single line about Wayne Rooney struck a chord. Lampard was explaining why some of his squad had needed time to adjust to the intensity and scrutiny of the Premier League after a difficult opening month. Rather than offering excuses, he was pointing to the reality of integrating players who lack top-flight experience and the mental step required to perform consistently at this level.

He continued: “So there’s been a few things that we’ve had to deal with that have been there in the first four games. This can now hopefully give us confidence, not to get carried away, there’s so much to do and every win, point and everything you get in this league will be an absolute fight. But the boys have shown today that they can do it, and there’s a blueprint for them to carry on doing that.”

Lampard also addressed the emotional side of the victory. After four games without a point or a goal, the relief was clear.

“Having lost our first four games, all in different circumstances, I think it’s easy to feel negative, to feel like ‘Where’s the goal, where’s the win coming from?’” he said. “And the reality is in football you have to fight for it, you have to work for it, you have to have organisation. I could go through so many players today, how they individually work within the collective.”

On the controversial VAR decision that preserved the three points, Lampard was measured but firm.

“I love VAR!” he joked at first, before adding more seriously: “I’m not going to comment too much because I know it will be swings and roundabouts as the season goes on. I was worried. From my view, it looked like he had clipped him… As you see on the replay, he has that little step on him which puts him off balance and it’s a foul. I won’t get carried away because sometimes they go for you and sometimes they go against you, but I think that’s VAR reaching the right decision.”

The combination of the historic result and Lampard’s candid, thoughtful analysis has made the interview one of the most discussed moments of the weekend. Supporters have praised the manager for speaking with clarity and honesty rather than falling back on clichés, while the Wayne Rooney reference in particular has been widely shared.

For Coventry, the win provides the first tangible reward for their efforts since returning to the Premier League. For Lampard, it offers a platform to build on — and a public demonstration of the standards and mindset he is trying to instil in a squad still learning what it takes to compete at this level.

As the international break begins, the Sky Blues will head into it with belief restored and a manager whose words continue to resonate far beyond the final whistle.
