Southampton, West Ham and Ipswich Town in Transfer Race for Nelson Deossa Before Deadline

Southampton, West Ham and Ipswich Face Transfer Battle for Nelson Deossa as Deadline Approaches

The race to sign Real Betis midfielder Nelson Deossa is beginning to heat up, with Southampton, West Ham United and Ipswich Town among the clubs reportedly interested in securing his signature before the September 1 transfer deadline.

What initially looked like a straightforward opportunity for interested clubs has quickly become a complicated transfer situation, with several teams believed to have made enquiries about the Colombian midfielder.

According to Spanish outlet Diario de Sevilla, Southampton and West Ham are both waiting for Deossa to make a decision on his future before they can take the next step towards completing a potential deal.

Ipswich are also understood to be monitoring the situation closely, adding another layer of competition to what could become an intriguing transfer battle in the final days of the window.

Real Betis willing to listen to offers

Real Betis are reportedly keen to find a solution for the 26-year-old as they look to create more room within their wage budget.

Despite that, Deossa has not exactly been pushed out of the first-team picture.

The midfielder was involved in Betis’ opening La Liga fixture of the season, coming off the bench during their 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad.

That appearance could be significant because it highlights the dilemma facing the player.

On one hand, there are several clubs willing to offer him an opportunity for more regular football. On the other, Betis can offer something that most of his English suitors cannot — Champions League football.

That could make Deossa’s decision much more difficult than simply choosing the club that can guarantee him more playing time.

Southampton and West Ham face serious competition

Southampton and West Ham are believed to be among the clubs pushing for the Colombian, but they are far from alone.

Olympiacos, Vasco da Gama, Club América, River Plate and Ipswich Town have all reportedly made enquiries about the midfielder.

The presence of Ipswich could be particularly interesting.

Unlike Southampton and West Ham, Ipswich are competing in the Premier League, potentially giving them an advantage when it comes to convincing Deossa that England is the right destination.

Southampton, meanwhile, are attempting to strengthen their squad after a difficult opening to their Championship campaign.

The Saints currently sit bottom of the Championship after two matches, with minus one point to their name, meaning adding quality and experience to the midfield could be an important priority.

Why Deossa has attracted so much attention

Deossa’s numbers help explain why a number of clubs are interested in bringing him in.

During the 2025/26 campaign, he made 20 league appearances for Betis, although only eight of those appearances came as starts.

His statistical profile suggests a midfielder who can contribute both to possession and chance creation.

According to the figures provided by FotMob, Deossa averaged 32.65 successful passes per 90 minutes and completed 83.4 per cent of his passes.

He also averaged 1.10 accurate long balls per 90 minutes, with a 60 per cent accuracy rate.

Going forward, he recorded 0.98 chances created per 90 minutes, while averaging 0.12 big chances created.

Those numbers could make him an attractive option for clubs looking for a midfielder capable of moving the ball efficiently while also contributing to attacking phases.

But the biggest problem is Deossa himself

For all the interest surrounding the midfielder, there is one major obstacle that every interested club must overcome.

Deossa has not yet given the green light to leave Spain.

The Colombian is reportedly willing to remain at Betis and fight for his place under experienced manager Manuel Pellegrini.

That stance could completely change the complexion of the transfer race.

Even if Betis are prepared to sell and several clubs are willing to negotiate, the deal cannot move forward unless Deossa is convinced that leaving the Spanish club is the right decision for his career.

And there is an obvious reason why he might be reluctant.

Betis have Champions League football to offer this season.

For a player who has not yet established himself as an undisputed starter, the opportunity to remain at a club competing at Europe’s highest level could be extremely difficult to turn down.

Southampton’s interest comes at an interesting time

For Southampton, the timing of the interest in Deossa is particularly important.

The club are looking for a response after a disappointing start to their Championship campaign, and supporters are understandably keen to see improvements to the squad.

There is a belief among some Southampton fans that Deossa could become an influential figure if he were brought to the club.

However, there are also concerns that the midfielder may have better options available to him.

The Saints will therefore need to convince him that joining them would represent a genuine step forward rather than simply a move for the sake of playing more football.

Their League Cup meeting with West Ham adds an interesting twist to the situation, with the two clubs facing each other while potentially competing for the same player.

West Ham also have work to do

West Ham’s interest gives Deossa another Premier League option, but they too could struggle to convince him to abandon the possibility of Champions League football with Betis.

The London club can offer the attraction and intensity of Premier League football, but Betis’ European ambitions remain a major selling point.

Pellegrini’s side have demonstrated their desire to remain among Spain’s leading clubs, and their Champions League qualification could make Deossa think twice before accepting an offer from elsewhere.

That means West Ham may have to do more than simply present a financial package.

They would need to convince the midfielder that he has an important role to play and that moving to England would accelerate his development.

Ipswich could be the wild card

Ipswich Town could potentially emerge as the surprise winner if the situation develops in their favour.

Their Premier League status gives them a significant advantage over Southampton, while Deossa would potentially have the opportunity to become an important part of their midfield.

The question is whether Ipswich can convince him that regular Premier League football outweighs the possibility of remaining with Betis and playing in the Champions League.

That is not an easy decision.

For a 26-year-old midfielder, consistent Premier League football could be hugely valuable. But Champions League football represents an opportunity that does not come around every season.

The clock is ticking

With the September 1 deadline rapidly approaching, the pressure is now increasing on all parties.

Betis want to reduce their wage commitments.

Several clubs want Deossa.

But the player himself has not yet decided that he wants to leave.

That leaves the transfer in a fascinating position.

Southampton, West Ham and Ipswich can continue to wait, but time is running out. If Deossa eventually decides to remain in Spain, all three clubs could be forced to turn their attention elsewhere.

If he does decide to leave, however, a dramatic transfer battle could unfold in the final days of the window.

For now, the biggest question remains simple: where does Nelson Deossa want to play?

Until the Colombian midfielder provides his answer, Southampton, West Ham, Ipswich and the other interested clubs can only wait.
