Simona Halep’s unexpected retirement this Tuesday marked the end of one of the most consistent careers on the WTA Tour in the last decade. The former World No. 1 departs as the second-winningest player in WTA 1000 tournaments, with a total of nine titles.
Since the format’s introduction in 2009, Halep has been a standout performer. In total, she reached 39 quarterfinals, 29 semifinals, and 18 finals in WTA 1000 events. The Romanian claimed nine WTA 1000 trophies in her career, with the last one coming at the 2022 Canadian Open—just weeks before testing positive for doping.
With 186 match wins, Halep ranks second in the all-time WTA 1000 victory list, trailing only Victoria Azarenka, who leads with 205 wins and 10 titles. Caroline Wozniacki follows in third place with 183 wins and six titles, with a strong chance of surpassing Halep this year depending on her tournament appearances.
Petra Kvitova sits in fourth place (180 wins, 9 titles) as she prepares for her return this season, making her another contender to surpass Halep in an eventual second-place ranking. Rounding out the top five is retired former World No. 2 Agnieszka Radwanska, who recorded 175 wins and secured five WTA 1000 titles before retiring.
For reference, when considering WTA 1000 events and their equivalents across the Open Era, Serena Williams remains the all-time leader with 263 wins. However, Halep still manages to secure a spot in the top 10.
Halep’s WTA 1000 trophy haul includes titles at the Qatar Open (2014), Dubai Championships (2015), Indian Wells (2015), Madrid Open (2016-2017), Canadian Open (2016, 2018, 2022), and Rome Open (2020).
