Derek McInnes’ Celtic Ban Battle Takes New Twist as SFA Appeal Date Finally Revealed and Rangers fight for their boss

The Ibrox boss was charged by the beaks over comments he made while he was Hearts boss

Derek McInnes will learn next Monday if he will be in the dug-out for his first Old Firm game as Rangers boss.

The Premier Sports Cup quarter final clash at Ibrox would be the last of his three-game touchline ban if his appeal on August 31 fails.

McInnes received the punishment following comments he made while he was Hearts boss last season, calling a penalty awarded to Celtic as “disgusting”.

The beaks ruled his comments in the penultimate Premiership game of the season, when the Hoops got a late spot kick against Motherwell at Fir Park, were in breach of Scottish FA Rule 72, resulting in a three-game immediate ban.

But Rangers appealed and McInnes will present his case in the hope of having the punishment overturned, reduced or replaced with a fine.

If he doesn’t win his case, though, he will be in the stand for the Premiership trip to Falkirk next midweek, the home game against Motherwell on September 5, and that huge derby clash eight days later at Ibrox.

His first game back in the dug-out would be for the daunting trip to Celtic Park for the second half of the Old Firm derby double header on September 20.
