Sunderland Player Decides to Leave the Club ‘Just Four Games’ into the New Season in Huge Blow

Sunderland’s start to the new Premier League season has already been challenging enough. Four games played, limited rewards on the board, and a squad still adjusting to the demands of top-flight football under Régis Le Bris. Now the club faces another setback after midfielder Abdoullah Ba has decided he wants to leave the Stadium of Light.

The 23-year-old Frenchman, who has found himself on the fringes of the first-team picture, has made it clear that he sees his future away from Wearside. With the English transfer window closed, any move would likely depend on interest from clubs in leagues where the window remains open, but the intention itself has landed as a significant blow so early in the campaign.

Ba joined Sunderland from Le Havre in 2022 and showed promise during the club’s Championship years. However, opportunities under Le Bris have been extremely limited. He has not featured regularly in the Premier League squad and has spent much of his recent time with the under-21s. Sources close to the situation indicate that the player has grown frustrated with his lack of game time and has informed the club of his desire to secure a move where he can play regularly.

Speaking about his decision, Ba said: “I have a lot of respect for Sunderland and for everything the club has done for me, but I need to play. Sitting on the sidelines is not what I want at this stage of my career. I have spoken to the club and made my feelings clear. I believe the best thing for everyone is for me to find a new challenge where I can get regular minutes and continue developing.”

The timing has surprised many supporters. Just four matches into the new season, the departure of even a fringe player adds another layer of disruption at a time when Sunderland are still trying to find consistency. While Ba was not expected to be a regular starter, squad depth remains important across a long campaign that also includes European football.

Club sources suggest that Sunderland are open to facilitating an exit if the right offer arrives, particularly given Ba’s contract situation. He is entering the final stages of his deal, and a permanent move would allow both parties to move on. Previous interest from Peterborough United in the summer ultimately fell through, while Turkish side Sivasspor were also linked. Whether a deal can be revived or a new destination emerges remains to be seen.

For Sunderland, the focus remains on the players currently driving the first team. Le Bris has prioritised a specific group as he looks to establish the side in the Premier League. Yet the decision of a young player to seek a way out so early in the season inevitably raises questions about squad harmony and the pathways available to those on the fringes.

Supporters have reacted with a mixture of disappointment and understanding. Many recognise that Ba needs regular football at this stage of his career, while others feel the timing is far from ideal. In a season where every point and every squad member could prove valuable, losing a player — even one who has not been central — still registers as an unwanted distraction.

As things stand, Abdoullah Ba’s future at Sunderland appears to be reaching its conclusion. The club will continue to monitor options for an exit, while the player looks for a fresh opportunity. For a Sunderland side still finding its feet in the Premier League, it is another complication they could have done without just four games into the new campaign.
