Carl Rushworth blasts Coventry City loses in shocking statements. ‘We failed and that’s why we’re suffering right now’

Coventry City’s return to the Premier League was built on the foundations of a dominant Championship title win under Frank Lampard. The Sky Blues came up with momentum, belief and a clear identity forged through hard work and togetherness. Goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, who played every league minute of the promotion campaign and later sealed a permanent move from Brighton, was central to that success. The early weeks of life back in the top flight, however, have delivered a harsh reality. Four matches, four defeats, no goals scored and a 5-0 home thrashing by Brighton have left the club bottom of the table and searching for answers.
Brighton arrived at the Coventry Building Society Arena as one of the form sides in the division and left with a comprehensive victory that underlined the gap Coventry must close. The result, combined with the team’s overall start, prompted Rushworth to deliver some of the most honest public comments of the season so far.
Carl Rushworth said: “We failed. That’s the truth of it. We failed in the moments that matter and that’s why we’re suffering right now. Four games, no points, no goals. You can’t dress that up. We are where we are because we haven’t been good enough.”
Carl Rushworth continued: “In the Championship we were clinical, we were solid, we controlled games. Up here every mistake is punished. We are giving teams too many chances and we are not taking the ones we create. That is the story of our season so far.”
Carl Rushworth said: “Against Brighton we started okay. We had spells where we looked like we belonged. Then the first goal went in and the confidence dipped. The second goal came from a mistake we can’t make at this level. After that the red card made it almost impossible, but the damage was already being done before that.”
Carl Rushworth added: “I look at the goals we have conceded across the four games and too many of them are preventable. Individual errors, switches in concentration, not being aggressive enough in both boxes. As a goalkeeper you feel every one of them. It hurts because we know we are better than this.”
Carl Rushworth stated: “We have created chances. That is the frustrating part. We have had opportunities to score and we haven’t taken them. In the Premier League you don’t get many. When they come you have to be ruthless. We haven’t been. That is on all of us.”
Carl Rushworth said: “The mentality has to change. Feeling sorry for ourselves will get us nowhere. We are suffering because we failed to meet the standards this league demands. The only way out is to face that and fix it.”
Carl Rushworth continued: “What can we do? First, be harder to play against. Cut out the soft goals. Defend as a unit for ninety minutes, not sixty. Second, be clinical. When the chance comes, take it. Third, stick together. The dressing room is still strong but we need to show it on the pitch under pressure.”
Carl Rushworth added: “We have to trust the process the gaffer has put in place. The work on the training ground is good. Now we have to transfer it into matches. No more slow starts, no more switches in concentration. Every player has to take responsibility.”
Carl Rushworth said: “I believe in this group. I believed in it last season and I still do. But belief alone is not enough. We have to earn the right to get results in this league. That means higher intensity, better decision-making and a killer instinct in both boxes.”
Carl Rushworth finished: “We are suffering right now because we failed to deliver when it mattered. The only response is to work harder, stay honest with each other and put it right. No excuses. Just action. That is the only way this season turns around.”
