COVENTRY CITY STAR FORCED TO ISSUE IMMEDIATE APOLOGY AFTER TRAINING INCIDENT CAUGHT ON CAMERA

Coventry City midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi has been forced to issue an immediate public apology after a training-ground disagreement with teammate Frank Onyeka was caught on camera and quickly spread online.

The incident occurred during a routine session at the club’s training base this week as Frank Lampard’s side continue their preparations for the new Premier League season. What started as a normal exchange during a defensive drill escalated into a heated disagreement between the two midfielders that was filmed and shared widely within minutes.

According to those present, the flashpoint came when Yirenkyi felt Onyeka’s challenge had been too aggressive. Onyeka insisted it was simply the level of intensity required. Voices were raised and gestures were exchanged before coaches stepped in to calm the situation.

Yirenkyi later addressed the matter directly.

“It was nothing more than a disagreement in the heat of the moment,” he said. “Frank and I both want the same thing – to push each other and get better for the team. I raised my voice, said things I shouldn’t have, and I regret that. I’ve already spoken to him privately and apologised face to face. Now I’m saying it publicly because the video is out there and I don’t want any misunderstanding.”

Onyeka also commented briefly on the exchange.

“These things happen in training,” he explained. “We are competitive players and sometimes the passion comes out. Caleb came to me straight away, we sorted it, and that’s the end of it as far as I’m concerned. No hard feelings at all. We’re teammates and we move on together.”

Club sources confirmed that the matter was dealt with quickly and internally. Lampard is understood to have spoken to both players after the session and reinforced that while high intensity is encouraged, mutual respect remains essential.

A club statement issued later the same day read: “An incident during training involving two of our players was captured on camera and shared online. Caleb Yirenkyi has apologised to Frank Onyeka and the club considers the matter closed. We will not be commenting further.”

The video itself shows the two midfielders gesturing and speaking animatedly before being separated. No physical contact beyond normal training challenges appears to have taken place, and both men completed the remainder of the session without further disruption.

Supporters have largely reacted with understanding. Many pointed out that training-ground disagreements are common at professional clubs and that Yirenkyi’s swift apology demonstrated maturity. Others noted that the competitive edge on display is exactly what will be needed once the Premier League campaign begins.

One fan account summed up the general mood: “It’s training. Lads fall out, they make up, they move on. The fact Caleb apologised straight away says a lot about his character. Nothing to see here.”

The incident comes while Coventry are still integrating several new faces following their promotion. Yirenkyi and Onyeka are both important parts of Lampard’s midfield plans, and the club is keen to ensure any lingering tension is removed quickly.

Those close to the squad insist the disagreement has not affected the wider dressing-room atmosphere. Both players trained fully the following day and were seen interacting normally with the rest of the group.

For now, Coventry and the two players involved appear determined to draw a line under the episode. The immediate apology from Yirenkyi, the private conversation between the pair, and the club’s decision to address the matter publicly have largely contained what could have become a bigger distraction.

As the Sky Blues continue their pre-season programme, the focus will return to the pitch rather than any off-field noise. Caleb Yirenkyi has made his position clear in his own words, Frank Onyeka has accepted the apology, and the club has closed the book on the incident.

What began as a normal disagreement between two teammates has ended with a swift apology and a shared understanding that the only thing that matters now is preparing for the season ahead.
