How could he say that on a live interview: Frank Lampard throws brutal dig at Jamie Carragher after Coventry City defeat at Etihad

Frank Lampard has never been one to hide his feelings, but even by his standards this one raised a few eyebrows.

Standing pitch-side at the Etihad after Coventry’s narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester City, the Sky Blues boss was asked about the growing criticism from certain pundits who have already started writing off his newly promoted side. Without missing a beat, Lampard turned the conversation toward his old Stick to Football sparring partner Jamie Carragher.

“Listen, I respect Carra a lot, but some of the things being said already… it’s a bit much,” Lampard said with that familiar half-smile that never quite reaches his eyes. “We’ve played Arsenal and Manchester City in our first three games, scored zero, got zero points, and somehow we’re already finished according to a few people who haven’t managed a promoted team in their lives. Maybe they should try it before they start writing the scripts.”

The dig landed hard. Carragher has been among the more vocal voices questioning whether Coventry have the quality to stay up, and Lampard’s comments — delivered live on national television — immediately set social media alight.

In fairness, the context was clear. Coventry had just produced one of their better performances of the young season, frustrating City for long periods and creating enough chances to feel hard done by. Haaland’s first-half header proved decisive, but Lampard’s side grew into the game and forced several late saves from Donnarumma.

“I don’t think we deserved to lose,” Lampard insisted. “As the game went on we grew. The boys did great. I’m disappointed we didn’t get what we deserved, which was a point. We’ve played the two toughest teams on paper. All you can do is control the performance.”

He was particularly keen to defend his players against the early narrative of crisis. “There was a real organisation to the team. Ethan Pinnock came in and was great. There weren’t too many moments when we were on edge. I’m really pleased with our lads and the fans showed what they thought of the performance.”

For Coventry supporters still riding the high of last season’s Championship title, the comments felt like pure Lampard — protective of his squad, unapologetic, and unwilling to let the noise drown out the progress. Three games into their Premier League return, the Sky Blues sit bottom with no points and no goals, but the manager is refusing to panic.

Whether Carragher takes the bait remains to be seen. What is clear is that Lampard has drawn an early line in the sand. After years of being the one analysed and second-guessed, the former Chelsea midfielder is now the one delivering the verdicts — live, on camera, and without filter.

How could he say that? Because, right now, he means every word.
