Martin Bain Blasts ‘Horrendous’ Decision in Sunderland Defeat to Premier League Rivals. ‘I’m So Sick of This’

Sunderland produced a competitive and physical display against Arsenal at the Stadium of Light but ultimately fell to a 0-2 defeat. The Black Cats matched the champions for long periods, forced David Raya into important saves, and created clear opportunities. Yet the final scoreline was settled deep in stoppage time when Bukayo Saka won and converted a penalty after contact with Reinildo Mandava, who was also shown a second yellow card and sent off.
The late decision has left many connected with Sunderland frustrated. In the aftermath of the match, former club chief executive Martin Bain delivered a strong and emotional verdict that has quickly gained attention.
“That decision at the end was horrendous,” Bain said. “I’ve watched it back and I still can’t believe it was given. I’m so sick of this. We compete, we match them physically, we create chances, and then in the last moments of the game a soft penalty and a red card decide it. It’s hard to take.”
Bain continued, his frustration clear.
“Reinildo is trying to recover and stay with Saka. There is contact, yes, but is it enough for a penalty and a second yellow in the 97th minute of an Old Firm—sorry, of a Premier League match of this intensity? I don’t think so. I’m so sick of seeing these calls go against us when the game is on the line. Our players gave everything. The supporters got behind the team. And then it ends like that.”
The Sunderland performance had deserved more. Régis Le Bris’ side frustrated Arsenal for long spells, competed in every duel, and looked capable of taking something from the game until the late drama. The earlier penalty awarded to the hosts, which Enzo Le Fée saw saved by Raya, had already shown how fine the margins were. When the decisive moment came at the other end, the sense of injustice only grew.
Bain did not stop at the penalty itself.
“These are the moments that define seasons for clubs like ours,” he said. “We are trying to establish ourselves back in this league. We are trying to build something. Then you get a decision that feels soft and it takes the air out of everything. I’m sick of it. The players will be sick of it. The fans are sick of it. We need consistency. We need decisions that make sense when the pressure is highest.”
Arsenal, of course, will point to their quality and the fact they found a way to win. Bruno Guimarães’ excellent strike had given them the lead, and Saka’s late penalty sealed the points. Mikel Arteta’s side remain unbeaten and sit top of the table. From a Sunderland perspective, however, the manner of the defeat has left a bitter taste.
Bain’s comments reflect a wider feeling among supporters who felt their side had done enough to earn at least a point. The red card to Reinildo in particular has been debated, with some arguing that a free-kick or a standard foul would have been sufficient rather than a second yellow that ended the contest as a competitive fixture.
“I’m not saying we deserved to win,” Bain added. “Arsenal are a top side and they showed their quality. But I am saying that the late penalty and the red card were harsh. In a game we competed so well in, that is a difficult way to lose. I’m so sick of this feeling that the big moments go against us.”
As Sunderland turn their attention to the next fixtures, the challenge remains clear. Results must improve, and the fine margins that decided this match will need to start falling in their favour. For now, Martin Bain’s blunt assessment has given voice to the anger felt by many on Wearside after another frustrating afternoon against Premier League rivals.
