Sebastien Pocognoli press conference as it happened as new Scotland boss outlines vision for the future

The Belgian has signed a two-year deal and will be hellbent on helping us qualify for Euro 2028 – and finally get out of the groups.

The Belgian was unveiled at Hampden this morning after signing a two-year deal to succeed Steve Clarke, who resigned days after Scotland suffered a deeply-dispiriting World Cup 2026.

He becomes only the second foreigner to manage the country after Berti Vogts over 20 years ago.

And the 39-year-old, who led Union St Gilloise to their first Belgian top tier title in 90 years in 2025, said he is focused on bringing a new style to the national team as well as developing the next generation of stars.

Pocognoli said: “I’m very proud to be here. It’s a very strong challenge, an ambitious challenge, with also a project to develop the future of Scottish football.

“These are the metrics. But the human aspect was also very important.

“It’s an exciting challenge because I never go to a challenge where I can’t feel the connection.

“Scotland is a passionate country for football.

“And also, regarding the strong foundation that Steve Clarke and his staff did, that I can use this heritage to put the next accent in the style of play while also developing young players for the future of Scottish football. That’s why I’m here.
