Absolutely Honking’ – Newcastle Ace Slammed After ‘Shameful’ 4-1 Thrashing vs Leeds

Newcastle United fans have hit out at one of Matthias Jaissle’s players after their side suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Leeds United on Monday night.

The Magpies first conceded through a Lewis Miley own goal in the 32nd minute and the floodgates opened as the hosts wreaked havoc. Jayden Bogle made it two-nil two minutes later before Dominic Calvert-Lewin netted in first-half stoppage time.

Noah Okafor bagged Leeds’ fourth in the 59th minute before Bazoumana Toure managed to grab a 90th minute consolation goal. Daniel Farke’s men sealed one of their best wins since earning promotion last year and while it was a night to remember for the Peacocks, it was one to forget for the Tyneside outfit.

Botman Struggles as Newcastle Lose to Leeds

Jaissle went with Sven Botman alongside Malick Thiaw in central defence and the Dutch centre-back struggled to handle a ruthless Leeds attack. He has been a starter under his new manager since the start of the season, but his performance tonight raised doubts.

Botman and Thiaw struggled to deal with Farke’s frontline and were punished, albeit by an excellent overall display from the hosts. The 26-year-old, who has been with the Tynesiders since July 2022, won one of two tackles, won three of five aerial duels and made one error leading to a shot.

Newcastle had made a promising start to the season before tonight, earning 2–2 draws against Liverpool and Bournemouth and beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0. Botman impressed in those games, but his outing tonight might just have Jaissle eagerly awaiting Dan Burn’s return from an ankle injury.

Burn has been sidelined with an ankle injury and isn’t expected back until around October after the upcoming international break. The English centre-back has been a big miss for Jaissle who appointed him as captain following Bruno Guimaraes’ departure.

Newcastle Fans Slam Botman Performance in Leeds Loss

While Botman wasn’t the only Newcastle player who received criticism following the defeat to Leeds, some fans believed he was one of the worst performers. One supporter suggested this might have been his last chance in Jaissle’s starting lineup:

“Surely the jig is up for Botman now. On a good day he’s a bang average central defender, on an average day he’s a liability and on his bad days, of which there are many, he’s indescribably awful.”

Another fan wanted the Dutchman subbed off: “He needs to get Murphy and Botman off instantly. Absolutely honking.”

One supporter added: “Has Botman been to the laughing farm pre season? He’s absolutely shameful.”

Another replied: “Schar and Burn are still our best centre halfs. Thiaw is overrated, and botman has been useless for over 2 years now.”

One wrote: “This is unbearable Murphy and Botman should never wear the shirt again.”

Another added: “Botman is scarily bad nowadays. Absolute liability.”
