PREMIER LEAGUE RELEASE STATEMENT CONFIRMING WHY TAIWO AWONIYI WAS GIVEN RED CARD AGAINST BRIGHTON

Coventry City’s afternoon against Brighton went from difficult to disastrous early in the second half when Taiwo Awoniyi was shown a straight red card. The Sky Blues were already 2-0 down at the time, and the dismissal left them with an uphill battle that ultimately ended in a 0-5 defeat. The decision quickly became one of the main talking points from the match.
Awoniyi was judged to have caught Brighton defender Maxim De Cuyper with his elbow while competing for an aerial ball. Referee Tony Harrington issued a straight red for violent conduct, a call that was checked and upheld by VAR. Just minutes after the final whistle, the Premier League released an official statement explaining the reasoning behind the decision.
In the statement, the Premier League confirmed: “The on-field referee’s decision to send off Taiwo Awoniyi for violent conduct has been reviewed and supported by the Video Assistant Referee. The player was judged to have used excessive force by leading with his elbow into the face of an opponent when challenging for the ball.”
The statement continued: “Under the Laws of the Game, a player who endangers the safety of an opponent by using his elbow in this manner is considered to have committed violent conduct. The contact was clear, and the referee was correct to issue a red card.”
It added further clarity on the VAR process.
“VAR reviewed the incident from multiple angles and determined that no clear and obvious error had been made by the on-field official. As a result, the red card stands.”
The explanation is likely to frustrate many Coventry supporters who felt the challenge was a natural part of an aerial duel and that a yellow card would have been sufficient. Awoniyi himself appeared stunned by the decision as he left the pitch, and the club had earlier issued its own statement expressing disappointment with key refereeing calls.
Brighton went on to take full advantage of the extra man, adding three further goals to complete a dominant victory. For Coventry, the red card remains a major talking point as they reflect on another difficult afternoon in the Premier League.
The Premier League’s confirmation leaves little room for appeal on the grounds of wrongful dismissal, meaning Awoniyi is set to serve a suspension. Attention now turns to how Frank Lampard’s side respond in the coming fixtures as they continue their search for a first point and first goal of the season.
